Chapter 7 - The Paper Inside the Roses

I crossed the lawn toward the cake table.

Vanessa blocked me.

“You’re frightening the child.”

I stepped closer until only inches separated us.

“No. You are.”

Michael reached for my shoulder.

Eleanor called security.

Two guards moved from the edge of the garden, and Michael immediately lowered his hand.

Leo pointed toward a tall arrangement of pink roses beside the cake.

“There,” he said.

I lifted the vase carefully.

A plastic document sleeve had been taped beneath its base.

The crowd erupted in whispers.

Vanessa stared at the ground.

I pulled the sleeve free.

Inside was the missing neonatal transfer record.

But there was something else behind it.

A handwritten note on St. Catherine’s stationery.

The note was signed by Dr. Helen Morris, the physician who had performed my emergency delivery.

It stated that my newborn had been moved to the neonatal unit under a temporary identification number because the hospital computer system had crashed during a storm.

That explained why Leo’s original electronic record had been difficult to locate.

It also explained how someone could later manipulate the county filing.

The transfer form listed me as the biological mother.

My name appeared three times.

Vanessa’s birth certificate was false.

A guest near the front said it aloud.

“She forged it.”

Vanessa’s head snapped up.

“No. Michael gave it to me.”

Every eye shifted toward my husband.

Michael’s face went rigid.

Vanessa realized what she had said.

She tried to correct herself.

“He helped me obtain it legally.”

“How?” Eleanor asked.

Michael said nothing.

I looked at the date printed on the false certificate.

It had been issued six weeks earlier.

Exactly when Michael began insisting that I sign new marital property documents.

The affair was only part of this.

The false motherhood claim was meant to serve a larger plan.

I turned to him.

“You weren’t trying to leave me.”

His breathing changed.

May you like

“You were trying to take Leo.”

👉 The forged certificate was connected to documents Michael had pressured me to sign—and those documents could have stripped me of far more than custody.
