Chapter 1 - The Handbag Marlene Couldn’t Lose
“SHUT UP! SAY ONE WORD AND YOUR MOTHER DIES!”
Marlene Walker had one knee pressed beside eight-month-old Lily’s body and one hand clamped over the baby’s mouth.
Lily kicked helplessly against the bedroom floor.
Then—
SLAM!
The door burst open.
Ethan Walker stood there in mud-covered work boots.
For half a second, he couldn’t process what he was seeing.
Then rage took over.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY DAUGHTER?!”
He crossed the room, tore Marlene away from Lily, and shoved himself between them.

Ethan stared at his mother.
Lily suddenly pointed toward a black leather handbag sitting on the chair.
“Dad… don’t let her take that bag!”
Marlene’s face changed.
She lunged.
Ethan got there first.
He snatched the handbag away and opened it.
Then froze.
Inside sat a phone.
Not Marlene’s.
A cracked white phone with a blue case.
Ethan knew it instantly.
It belonged to his wife, Ava.
The same phone police had never found when Ava disappeared six weeks earlier.
Ethan slowly looked at his mother.
Marlene went white.
He reached deeper.
Ava’s passport.
Her wedding ring.
A motel keycard.
And an envelope bearing Ethan’s name.
“What the hell is this?”
Marlene grabbed for the bag.
Ethan jerked it away and slapped her hand aside.
“GET OUT OF MY HOUSE—RIGHT NOW.”
For the first time in Ethan’s life, his mother obeyed.
She backed toward the door.
But before leaving, she looked at Lily.
Not with hatred.
With fear.
Ethan waited until she was gone.
Then locked the door.
His hands were shaking as he removed the envelope.
Ava’s handwriting covered the front.
ETHAN — IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME.
He opened it.
Only one sheet was inside.
Ethan,
If I disappear, do not believe I left you.
His knees nearly gave out.
For six weeks, everyone had told him the same story.
Ava had run away.
