Chapter 2 - Ava Never Left Them

Ethan called the police immediately.

He handed over the handbag.

The phone.

Passport.

Ring.

Keycard.

Everything.

Then he kept a photographed copy of Ava’s letter.

Detective Laura Mitchell reopened the missing-person case from a new angle.

“Your mother told us Ava packed voluntarily.”

Ethan stared at her.

“She lied.”

“She also said Ava took her passport.”

“It was in Mom’s bag.”

Laura nodded.

“That matters.”

The cracked phone was damaged but recoverable.

A forensic technician pulled the last messages Ava had sent.

Most were to Ethan.

He had never received them.

One read:

Your mother came by again. She wants me to sign something.

Another:

She keeps saying Lily changed the trust.

Then:

Ethan, please call me. I’m scared.

Ethan felt sick.

His phone had shown no messages.

“Can someone delete texts before they reach you?”

Laura asked for his old device.

The answer emerged two days later.

A forwarding and blocking application had been installed on Ethan’s phone.

Administrative access originated from his home Wi-Fi.

On a date when Ethan had been working out of state.

Marlene had been staying with Ava.

Ethan closed his eyes.

His mother hadn’t just lied after Ava vanished.

She had isolated them beforehand.

Laura then examined the motel keycard.

It belonged to the Ashford Inn, forty miles away.

Records showed Room 214 had been booked six weeks earlier.

Under Ava Walker’s name.

But the credit card belonged to Marlene.

Ethan’s pulse jumped.

“Was Ava there?”

Security footage had expired.

But a housekeeper remembered the room.

A woman had stayed there for two nights.

She was frightened.

Barely left the room.

And an older woman in a cream coat visited repeatedly.

Marlene.

Then the housekeeper remembered something else.

“She wasn’t alone when she checked out.”

“Who?”

“A man.”

Description:

Late fifties.

Gray hair.

Expensive coat.

Driving a black SUV.

Ethan didn’t recognize him.

Until Laura showed him the hotel registration form.

Emergency contact:

Victor Lang.

Ethan knew that name.

Victor was the attorney who had handled his late father’s estate.

And suddenly Ava’s message about “the trust” stopped sounding like paranoia.

👉 Marlene had paid for the room where Ava was last seen—and the attorney controlling Ethan’s family trust had apparently been there when she disappeared again.
