Chapter 10 - Ava Faced Marlene Again
Ava did not want to see Marlene.
Then came a court hearing concerning temporary protective orders and trust administration.
Marlene was there.
Ava walked into the room beside Ethan.
Marlene stared at her as if she had seen a ghost.
“You.”
Ava stopped.
“Yes.”
Marlene’s face tightened.
“You destroyed my son.”
Ethan started to speak.
Ava touched his hand.
She wanted this one.
“No.”
Ava looked at Marlene.
“You taught him not to question you.”
Marlene laughed.
“And you turned him against his family.”
“I am his family.”
That landed.
Marlene’s eyes moved toward Lily, safely elsewhere with Ava’s sister.
“She never belonged in this.”
Ava’s expression hardened.
“She’s the only person who never chose any of this.”
The hearing began.
Victor testified.
The financial investigator testified.
A Cedar Ridge administrator described the false information given about Ethan.
A forensic examiner explained the intercepted messages.
The trust accountant showed unauthorized transactions.
Then Ethan testified.
His attorney asked:
“When did you first suspect your mother?”
Ethan answered:
“When I opened her handbag.”
Marlene looked down.
“What did you find?”
“My wife’s phone. Passport. Wedding ring.”
“And what did that tell you?”
“That the story I had been given about Ava leaving was impossible.”
Then came the recording from the microSD card.
Marlene’s voice filled the courtroom:
Once Ava is out of the house, Ethan will fall apart. I can handle him.
Silence.
Ethan watched his mother hear herself.
Her face changed.
For the first time, she looked less angry than exposed.
Then the trust attorney played Daniel Walker’s recorded signing of the independent-oversight amendment.
Ethan’s father appeared on screen.
“If Ethan has a child, no one person should control that child’s inheritance.”
Marlene closed her eyes.
Daniel had defeated the exact structure she tried to preserve.
The judge continued the suspension of Marlene’s authority and imposed strict protective conditions while the broader cases proceeded.
Outside, Marlene called after Ethan.
“I’m still your mother!”
He stopped.
Turned.
“Yes.”
She looked surprised.
Ethan continued:
“And that’s exactly why what you did hurts this much.”
Then he walked away with Ava.
No shouting.
No revenge.
