Chapter 6 - Victor Turned on Marlene
Victor Lang did not suddenly become a good man.
He became afraid.
That distinction mattered to Ethan.
Victor admitted helping Marlene disguise trust withdrawals.
He admitted drafting misleading papers.
He admitted arranging Ava’s stay at Cedar Ridge.
Then he said:
“Marlene told me Ethan agreed.”
Ethan stared at him through the interview-room glass.
Detective Mitchell asked:
“Did you verify that?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
Victor looked down.
“Because I was being paid.”
At least he stopped pretending.
Then investigators asked about the forged messages shown to Ava.
Victor hesitated.
“Marlene created them.”
“How?”
She had access to Ethan’s laptop.
Years earlier, Ethan gave her the password because she helped with household finances.
She never forgot it.
She created screenshots of conversations that never happened.
Victor printed them.
Ava believed Ethan wanted custody.
Ethan believed Ava had fled.
Two people who loved each other were isolated using the same lie.
Then Victor produced a folder.
Inside were emails from Marlene.
One read:
Once Ava is out of the house, Ethan will fall apart. I can handle him.
Another:
Keep Lily away from trust counsel until after her birthday.
And then:
If Ava gets the files to Ethan, we both lose everything.
Victor also surrendered the original trust withdrawal spreadsheet.
Marlene had taken far more than $900,000.
Over six years, questionable transactions totaled $2.7 million.
Ethan sat in silence.
His father’s land.
His grandfather’s trust.
Money Marlene always claimed she was “protecting for the family.”
Ava squeezed Ethan’s hand.
Then Victor revealed the darkest piece.
“Marlene came to Cedar Ridge four times.”
Ava looked at him.
“I only saw her twice.”
“She met administrators without you.”
“What did she say?”
Victor swallowed.
“That Ethan was preparing for divorce and wanted your stay extended.”
Ethan stood abruptly.
“That’s a lie.”
“Yes.”
“What else?”
Victor looked toward the table.
“She asked whether Ava could be transferred farther away.”
Ava went pale.
“Where?”
“Arizona.”
Ethan’s stomach turned.
If that happened, weeks could have become months.
Maybe longer.
Then Victor said:
“She wanted Lily too.”
Silence.
Ava whispered:
“What?”
Marlene had asked Victor to prepare temporary guardianship documents.
If Ava remained “unavailable” and Ethan could be portrayed as overwhelmed, Marlene hoped to gain temporary control over Lily.
And therefore leverage over the trust.
Ethan stared at him.
“My mother was going to take my child.”
Victor nodded.
“She said it was temporary.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“Of course she did.”
Everything Marlene did was temporary.
