Chapter 12 - Marlene Finally Said Why
During a later hearing, Marlene chose to testify.
Against her attorney’s advice.
She wanted everyone to hear her version.
At first, she sounded controlled.
Daniel had been weak.
Victor had been greedy.
Ava had interfered.
Ethan had become ungrateful.
Then the prosecutor asked:
“Why did you object to independent control of Lily’s trust?”
Marlene answered:
“Because outsiders don’t understand what Daniel built.”
“Daniel specifically requested outside oversight.”
“He was sick.”
“Medical evidence shows he was competent.”
Marlene’s jaw tightened.
Then:
“I kept that family together after he died.”
The prosecutor waited.
“By taking money?”
“I used money where it was needed.”
“By isolating Ava?”
“She was turning Ethan against me.”
There it was.

Ethan.
Marlene looked toward her son.
“You were mine before she came.”
The courtroom went silent.
Ethan felt something inside him settle.

“I never said that.”
“But you arranged circumstances that kept her away from Ethan.”
“I was giving them space.”
“Without telling Ethan where his wife was?”
Marlene said nothing.
“And Lily?”
Marlene’s face shifted.
“She cries constantly.”
Ethan’s fists tightened.
The prosecutor continued:
“You pinned an eight-month-old child to the floor.”
“I was trying to calm her.”
Video and Ethan’s testimony contradicted that.
Then came the threat.
Say one word and your mother dies.
Marlene tried to minimize it.
“I was angry.”
The prosecutor asked:
“Why mention Ava?”
Marlene finally snapped.
“Because everything was Ava!”
She pointed toward Ethan.
“He stopped listening to me because of her. He questioned the trust because of her. He shut me out because of her!”
Ethan stared.
Ava had been blamed for Ethan growing up.
That was all.
Marlene sat back.
Her anger disappeared.
The damage was done.
For years she said she acted for Ethan.
