Chapter 5 - What Ava Hid With Lily
Ethan rushed home with police permission to retrieve Lily’s clothes.
The purple unicorn shirt lay in the laundry basket.
Ava had sewn a tiny interior pocket beneath the hem.
Inside was a microSD card.
Ethan stared at it.
Marlene had been inches away from finding it.
No wonder she threatened Lily.
The card contained recordings.
Bank statements.
Photographs of documents.
And video from Ava’s phone.
The first recording showed Marlene sitting at Ethan’s kitchen table.
Victor beside her.
Ava had left her phone recording from another room.
Marlene’s voice:
“If Lily reaches twelve months, the voting transfer becomes automatic.”
Victor replied:
“We can challenge it.”
“Not if Ava keeps digging.”
Another recording.
Victor:
“She won’t sign.”
Marlene:
“Then make her disappear long enough for me to fix this.”
Ethan stopped the video.
Ava watched beside him.
“I thought they meant send me away.”
Ethan looked at her.
“They did.”
Ava nodded.
But that didn’t make it harmless.
The financial records were clearer.
Marlene had authorized withdrawals.
Victor created consulting invoices.
Money flowed into entities they controlled.
Ava had photographed everything.
Then came one final file.
A video recorded three days before Ava vanished.
Marlene confronted her in the bedroom.
“You think marrying my son made you powerful?”
Ava answered:
“No. Becoming Lily’s mother made me responsible.”
Marlene laughed.
“You don’t understand what that child cost me.”
“What?”
“Control.”
Ava stared at her.
Marlene continued:
“Before Lily, Ethan never questioned anything.”
That sentence hurt Ethan.
Because it was true.
He had trusted his mother automatically.
Signed documents.
Ignored Ava’s concerns.
Allowed Marlene to insert herself into their marriage.
Ava had been fighting almost alone.
Then the recording ended with Marlene noticing the phone.
The rest became static.
Ethan whispered:
“I should’ve believed you sooner.”
Ava looked at him.
“You didn’t know.”
“I also didn’t ask.”
That mattered.
Ethan didn’t want innocence he hadn’t earned.
Then Detective Mitchell called.
Victor Lang had requested an interview.
His attorney was present.
He wanted to cooperate.
