Chapter 1 - The Ring Beside His Plate

Judith Harper grabbed both sides of Major Claire Donovan’s Army uniform and jerked her toward the banquet table.
A crystal wine glass tipped over.
It struck Daniel’s plate, shattered against the white tablecloth, and spilled red wine across the place settings like a fresh wound.
“Take that uniform off.”
Twenty black-tie guests froze beneath the mansion’s chandeliers.
Claire caught Judith’s wrist before her nails could scrape the insignia on Claire’s collar.
Claire’s eyes burned with humiliation, but her voice remained low.
“Let go of me.”
Judith ripped her hand free and jabbed one diamond-covered finger into Claire’s chest.
“Choose the Army or my son.”
Claire looked past her.
Daniel sat in his tuxedo with one hand covering his mouth.
He had promised to defend her tonight.
He had promised his mother would behave.
Now he could not even lift his head.
“Daniel,” Claire said. “Look at me.”
He raised his eyes halfway.
Then dropped them again.
Claire slowly removed her engagement ring.
Judith smiled, believing she had won.
Claire placed the ring beside Daniel’s untouched dinner plate.
Click.
Daniel shot to his feet.
“Claire, wait.”
She stepped beyond his reach.
“You already chose.”
Then she walked out while every guest watched the wedding collapse behind her.
But Judith’s smile disappeared when Claire paused at the doorway and said one final thing.
