Chapter 15 - The Apology Without an Excuse
Daniel met Claire outside the military courthouse after Judith’s arraignment.
He held the engagement ring in his palm.
Claire looked at it but did not reach for it.
“My mother is being held pending trial,” he said.
Claire waited.
“Vale agreed to cooperate.”
Still, she said nothing.
Daniel swallowed.
“I loved you.”
“You may have.”
His face tightened.
“I still do.”
Claire’s voice remained gentle.
“Love without courage becomes another way to abandon someone.”
He looked down at the ring.
“I should have stood up.”
“You should have stood before she touched me.”
“I know.”
“No, Daniel. You knew then.”
That truth broke what remained of his defense.
He had known.
He had chosen comfort.
He had hoped Claire would absorb the humiliation so he would not have to confront his mother.
Daniel held out the ring.
Claire closed his fingers around it.
“Keep it.”
“Is there no chance?”
Claire looked at the man she had once planned to marry.
“There was a chance at that table.”
His eyes filled.
