Chapter 6 - The Public Attack

Judith stood abruptly.
“You come into my house wearing that uniform like a threat.”
Claire remained seated.
“No one threatened you.”
“You wear medals at a family dinner.”
“Your son asked me to.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Judith turned toward the guests.
“Do you see? Everything must remind us that she is more important than we are.”
Claire rose slowly.
The room seemed smaller once she stood.
“This conversation is over.”
She reached for her folder.
Judith moved around the table and blocked her.
“You are not taking my son away from this family.”
“I never asked him to leave.”
“You don’t have to ask. You make men feel small until they surrender.”
Daniel said nothing.
Claire looked at him.
The silence answered more than words could.
Judith then saw the edge of the official envelope inside Claire’s folder.
Her expression changed.
She grabbed Claire’s collar.
“Take that uniform off.”
The wine glass fell.
Guests recoiled.
Claire caught Judith’s wrist.
And the dinner became the scene Judith had been trying to create all night.
But she had miscalculated one thing.
