Chapter 11 - The Meeting at Dawn

Daniel waited outside the base visitor center before sunrise.

Claire almost refused to see him.

Her commander advised against discussing the investigation.

But Daniel claimed he possessed original documents.

They met in a monitored conference room with a CID investigator present.

Daniel placed the photographs on the table.

“My mother forged my name.”

The investigator examined them.

Claire watched Daniel.

“Did you ever sign blank pages for her?”

His silence answered.

“How many?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire leaned back.

“You didn’t ask what they were?”

“She said they funded veterans’ housing.”

“Did you verify that?”

“No.”

His shame deepened.

Claire had once mistaken that shame for sensitivity.

Now she saw what it really was.

A lifetime of avoiding responsibility.

Daniel slid a flash drive toward the investigator.

“This contains security footage from our corporate office.”

Judith had ordered the system erased overnight.

Daniel recovered a backup through an employee.

One clip showed Judith meeting a subcontractor already suspected of bribery.

Another showed her placing documents beneath Daniel’s hand while he signed without reading.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“I know this doesn’t fix what I did.”

“What exactly do you think you did?”

“I made being silent look harmless.”

👉 Daniel finally admitted his cowardice—but the footage revealed Judith was working with someone inside the military.
