Chapter 12 - The Officer Behind the Contracts

CID reviewed the footage.

The man meeting Judith was Colonel Robert Vale, a procurement officer stationed at Claire’s former command.

Claire knew him.

Vale had dismissed her housing complaints six months earlier.

He called the cracked foundations “cosmetic.”

He ordered her team to stop asking questions.

Claire refused.

That refusal had triggered the audit.

Now the reason was clear.

Vale approved inflated Harper Meridian contracts.

Judith routed part of the money through shell companies.

In exchange, Vale received payments disguised as consulting fees to his brother.

But the most damaging file was an audio recording.

Judith’s voice came through clearly.

If Claire keeps digging, Daniel will end the engagement. We’ll make her look emotional.

Vale laughed.

Women in uniform always become a problem when they forget who protects their careers.

Claire listened without moving.

Her commander’s jaw tightened.

Daniel covered his face.

Judith had designed the dinner as part of a federal cover-up.

The uniform attack was meant to provoke Claire into reacting physically.

If Claire had shoved Judith, screamed, or threatened anyone, the story might have worked.

Instead, Claire had removed the ring and walked away.
