By morning, social media carried photographs from the dinner.
One showed Judith gripping Claire’s uniform.
Another showed Claire removing her ring.
The caption told a different story.

The article claimed Claire had attempted to pressure Harper Meridian into giving her an executive position after marriage.
It said Judith intervened when Claire became aggressive.
Someone had released the prewritten statement.
Claire read it in her office at Fort Adams.
Her commander entered and closed the door.
“CID knows the story is false.”
Claire nodded.
“But until the investigation concludes, you’ll be temporarily reassigned away from contracting matters.”
It was the correct procedure.
It still felt like punishment.
Her phone filled with messages.
Some supportive.
Some vicious.
One said she had worn the uniform to intimidate civilians.
Another called her barren and unstable.
Claire switched off the screen.
She had faced enemy fire without shaking.
But public humiliation had a different kind of violence.
It attacked the life she returned home to protect.
Then an unknown number sent her a photograph.
Daniel’s signature on a contract.
