Chapter 4 - The Promise Daniel Hid

Claire looked directly at Daniel.

“Did you tell her I was leaving the Army?”

Daniel loosened his tie.

“I said we were discussing options.”

“We weren’t.”

Judith placed her glass down.

“You’re forty-three years old. How much longer do you intend to play soldier?”

One guest inhaled sharply.

Claire’s fingers tightened beneath the table.

“I do not play at my service.”

Judith waved one hand.

“My son needs a wife who is present.”

Daniel finally spoke.

“Claire, maybe this isn’t the right time.”

“The right time for what? The truth?”

His face flushed.

Judith leaned forward.

“Daniel wants children.”

“So do I.”

“He wants a real home.”

Claire’s jaw locked.

The mansion became painfully quiet.

Daniel touched Claire’s arm under the table.

“Please don’t turn this into a fight.”

Claire looked down at his hand.

She had spent eighteen months believing they were building a life together.

Now she realized Daniel had been building two different futures.

One with her.

One for his mother.
