Chapter 13 - The Second Dinner

Three weeks later, Judith invited the same guests back to the mansion.

She called it a reconciliation dinner.

No one believed her.

Several attended only because federal investigators had asked them to preserve any communications.

Judith stood beneath the chandelier in another dark gown.

She told everyone Claire had misunderstood the earlier argument.

She claimed Daniel had suffered a nervous breakdown.

Then the front doors opened.

Daniel entered alone.

Judith smiled with relief.

“My son.”

He did not approach her.

Behind him came two federal agents and a military investigator.

The guests rose in silence.

Judith’s face remained composed for three seconds.

Then she saw Claire enter wearing the same clean camouflage uniform.

Judith gripped the table.

“You are not welcome here.”

Claire stopped across from her.

“I did not come as your guest.”

An agent placed a warrant on the table.

Judith looked toward Daniel.

“You brought them into this house?”

Daniel’s voice shook.

“You brought this into our family.”

Judith slapped him.

The sound echoed across the room.

Daniel did not move.
