Chapter 1 - The Door She Locked

The bedroom door split near the lock when Lucas drove his shoulder into it.
Thunder shook the mansion as he stumbled inside, breathing hard, his work boots leaving rainwater across the polished floor.
Walter lay motionless beneath a thin blanket.
The eighty-five-year-old man’s skin looked gray in the weak bedside light. His lips were cracked. An empty water glass sat beyond his reach.
“Walter?”
No answer.
Lucas rushed to the bed and touched the old man’s neck. The pulse was faint, but it was there.
Then he saw the handwritten note beside the lamp.
Rachel’s elegant handwriting covered half the page.
“We’re at the resort. Finish off the old man yourself. Let him rot. He’s just a breathing corpse.”
Lucas read it twice.
His wife had known Walter was trapped in this room.
She had locked the door and left him without water, medicine, or a working phone.
“She left you here to die?”
Lucas reached for his phone.
Walter’s hand suddenly closed around his wrist.
“Don’t call anyone,” the old man whispered, “if you want the truth.”
Lucas froze.
Walter slowly opened his eyes.
The weakness was real, but so was the intelligence behind them.
“For two years,” Walter said, “I watched who would betray me.”
He pointed toward the wall beside the fireplace.
Lucas found a hidden latch beneath the wooden molding. A narrow compartment opened, revealing a black metal box.
Inside was a burned photograph, a sealed laboratory report, three bank statements, and a document bearing Lucas’s name.
Lucas lifted the document.
His face went cold.
It was a marriage certificate.
Rachel’s name appeared beside another man’s.
The wedding date was six months before she had married Lucas.
Then Walter whispered the sentence that made the storm outside seem silent.

“Your wife was never legally married to you.”
👉 But the false marriage was only the first lie Rachel had built her entire life around.
