Chapter 17 - Walter’s Last Secret
Lucas confronted Walter in a private courthouse room.
“What was she talking about?”
Walter looked older than he had in the hospital.
“After Emily disappeared, I found evidence that Charles was stealing.”
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
“And you did nothing?”
“I confronted him. He showed me a letter he claimed Emily had written. It said she would expose the family unless I gave her money.”
“You believed him.”
Walter closed his eyes.
“I wanted to believe him.”
The truth was painful but simple.
Walter had chosen the easier explanation.
He had allowed wealth, reputation, and pride to silence his doubts.
He had not caused Emily’s imprisonment, but his cowardice had given Charles time to hide it.
“I failed your mother,” Walter said. “Rachel knew because Charles kept my old letters.”
Lucas walked to the window.
He wanted Walter to be innocent.
He wanted one person in the family history to be clean.
But real justice required truth, even when it hurt the person he had begun to love.
Walter placed a signed document on the table.
It transferred full control of the family foundation to Lucas and removed Walter’s authority.
“I will testify publicly about what I ignored,” Walter said. “I will not purchase forgiveness.”
Lucas turned.
“Why give me control?”
“Because power without accountability destroyed this family.”
Lucas did not forgive him that day.
But he stayed.
At trial, Walter admitted his failures before the jury and the press.
He did not blame age, grief, or deception.
“I saw signs and chose comfort,” he said. “My daughter paid for my cowardice.”
His confession eliminated Rachel’s final weapon.
She could no longer expose Walter because Walter had exposed himself.
The jury heard six weeks of testimony.
Charles blamed Rachel.
Rachel blamed Charles.
Dr. Vale blamed both.
Each betrayal revealed another.
Then the prosecutor called the final witness.
A woman in her seventies entered the courtroom carrying a box of letters.
