Chapter 9 - The Arrest Rachel Planned

The officers separated everyone.
Lucas was handcuffed while firefighters rushed toward the mansion.
Rachel watched from beneath the greenhouse awning.
Her tears had stopped.
She had expected Lucas to be arrested.
What she had not expected was Adrian’s confession.
“He’s confused,” Rachel told the officer. “He has a history of addiction.”
Adrian stared at her.
“You said Lucas was dangerous. You never said Walter was being starved.”
Rachel stepped close to him.
“Think carefully before you speak.”
An officer heard her.
“Is that a threat?”
“It’s a private marital disagreement.”
“Which marriage?” Lucas asked.
Rachel’s jaw tightened.
Nora handed an officer her nursing credentials and described Walter’s condition.
The paramedics confirmed severe dehydration, missed medication, and possible intentional neglect.
They loaded Walter into an ambulance.
Before the doors closed, he called for Detective Maria Alvarez.
“She investigated my daughter’s disappearance thirty-five years ago,” Walter said. “Tell her Charles lied.”
The name changed Charles’s expression.
Lucas noticed.
Detective Alvarez had apparently never believed Emily’s death certificate.
At the county station, officers placed Lucas in an interview room.
Rachel gave her statement in the room next door.
Lucas could hear her crying through the wall.
“She became frightened when Walter threatened to cut Lucas from the will,” she said. “Lucas lost control.”
Every lie sounded rehearsed.
Then Detective Alvarez entered Lucas’s room.
She was in her early sixties, silver-haired and calm.
She placed Emily’s old hospital bracelet on the table.
“I have been looking for the person who saved this for thirty-three years.”
Lucas explained everything.
Alvarez listened without interruption.
When he finished, she opened a folder.
Inside was a photograph of Rachel entering the county records office two weeks earlier.
“She tried to remove the marriage certificate,” Alvarez said. “My clerk made a copy first.”
Lucas leaned forward.
“Can you prove she left Walter to die?”
“Not yet.”
She turned on a monitor.
Security footage from the mansion appeared.
Rachel walked into Walter’s room carrying a tray.
The video had no sound.
She placed a glass near him.
Walter drank.
Minutes later, he collapsed.

Rachel calmly removed a small bottle from her pocket.
👉 The camera had captured Rachel poisoning Walter—but the bottle itself had vanished.
