Chapter 12 - Rachel’s Real Reason

Rachel ordered Derek to place the memory card on the floor.
He did.
Adrian picked it up and crushed it beneath his shoe.
Rachel smiled at Lucas.
“You keep collecting paper and recordings as if truth matters by itself.”
“It matters when people hear it.”
“No one will.”
Lucas kept her talking.
His hidden recorder was still running.
“Why did you target my mother?”
“I didn’t. Charles handled Emily.”
“But you knew.”
“I knew enough.”
Rachel moved closer.
She finally admitted Charles had raised her after marrying her mother. He taught her that the Grant fortune belonged to whoever had the courage to take it.
When Walter began searching for Emily’s child, Charles discovered Lucas.
Rachel met Lucas, earned his trust, and married him under the false name Rachel Monroe.
Her task was simple.
Get Lucas to sign away any claim.
Afterward, create a divorce scandal that would make him look unstable.
But Walter secretly tested Lucas’s DNA.
“When Walter told me you were his grandson,” Rachel said, “everything became dangerous.”
“So you poisoned him.”
“I slowed him down.”
“And locked him without water.”
“He was supposed to die quietly.”
Adrian looked disturbed.
“You told me the dose was harmless.”
Rachel turned on him.
“You’ve lived off me for four years. Don’t suddenly develop a conscience.”
Lucas saw the fracture widen.
Adrian had believed he was Rachel’s partner.
He was another tool.
Sirens sounded outside.
Rachel’s face changed.
Lucas had activated the recorder’s emergency alert before entering.
Detective Alvarez had tracked him.
Rachel grabbed the gasoline can from Adrian and splashed fuel across the hallway.
“You brought them here?”
She struck the lighter.
Adrian seized her wrist.
“What are you doing?”
“Removing every witness.”
Derek tackled Rachel.
The lighter flew.
A gunshot cracked from the stairwell.
Derek collapsed.
Charles stepped from the shadows holding the pistol.
He looked at Rachel with disgust.
