Chapter 6 - The First Woman Rachel Destroyed

Nora led them through a tunnel beneath the wine cellar.
The passage ended inside a detached greenhouse beyond the burning wing.
Rain hammered the glass roof.
Nora checked Walter’s pulse and gave him water from her medical bag.
“You were severely dehydrated,” she said. “When was your last dose of heart medication?”
“Yesterday morning.”
Nora’s face hardened.
“She removed it.”
Lucas asked how she had entered the property.
“I never returned my old service key.”
She reached into her bag and removed a sealed evidence envelope.
Inside was a hospital bracelet.
The printed name read Emily Grant.
Lucas touched the bracelet with shaking fingers.
“My mother?”
Nora nodded.
“My mother worked at St. Catherine’s Hospital thirty-five years ago. Emily arrived after a car crash. She survived, but Charles Grant told Walter she died.”
Lucas looked at Walter.
The old man’s face crumbled.
“I buried an empty coffin.”
According to Nora, Emily had lived for three more years in a private psychiatric facility under a false name. Charles controlled her access to the outside world.
Before she died, Emily wrote letters to her son.
None of them reached Lucas.
Nora’s mother had saved one.
She handed Lucas a yellowed envelope.
The handwriting was unsteady.
“My sweet boy, they told me you were placed with a good family. I pray that is true. Your grandfather does not know what they did. Someday, someone must tell him.”
Lucas could barely finish reading.
Walter covered his mouth, fighting tears.
All those years, Lucas had believed his birth mother had abandoned him.
She had been imprisoned and silenced.
A branch snapped outside the greenhouse.
Nora extinguished the lantern.
Through the rain-streaked glass, Lucas saw one of Rachel’s men moving between the hedges.
Then another figure appeared behind him.
Charles Grant.
Walter’s seventy-year-old son stepped into the greenhouse carrying a pistol.

“You should have stayed ignorant, Lucas,” Charles said.
👉 The man who had erased Lucas’s mother from the family had finally come to erase her son.
