Chapter 14 - The Empty Grave
Charles was arrested after Detective Alvarez talked him into releasing Rachel.
Derek survived surgery.
Dr. Vale entered protective custody.
Rachel was detained, but her attorney argued that Charles had manipulated her and that the hospital confession had occurred under extreme duress.
She still refused to surrender.
Two days later, investigators opened Emily Grant’s grave.
Walter sat in a wheelchair beneath a black umbrella.
Lucas stood beside him.
There was no coffin beneath the soil.
Only a sealed steel container.
Inside were Emily’s medical records, photographs, letters, and a small cassette recorder.
Dr. Vale had hidden them as insurance against Charles.
One recording captured Emily speaking from the private facility.
“My brother says my father wants me forgotten. I don’t believe him. If Walter ever hears this, tell him I never stopped trying to come home.”
Walter lowered his head and wept.
Lucas knelt beside him.
Neither tried to hide their grief.
The records also proved Charles forged Emily’s death certificate and paid hospital officials to conceal her survival.
A second folder contained Rachel’s forged inheritance waiver.
The signature looked like Lucas’s, but the date exposed the fraud.
Lucas had been working in another state that day.
His employer still had security footage showing him inside the plant.
The district attorney dropped every remaining accusation against Lucas.
Rachel was charged with attempted murder, conspiracy, fraud, bigamy, evidence tampering, and arson.
Charles faced charges for kidnapping, false imprisonment, attempted murder, financial crimes, and obstruction.
As officers prepared to transport Rachel from the courthouse, she requested five minutes alone with Lucas.
He refused.
She called through the glass partition.
“I’m pregnant.”
Lucas stopped walking.
Rachel pressed a hand against her stomach.
“The baby is yours.”
For one painful moment, every emotion he thought he had buried returned.
Then Adrian stepped from the hallway holding a medical envelope.
“No,” he said. “The baby isn’t Lucas’s.”
