Chapter 15 - The Child She Used as a Shield
Adrian handed the prenatal DNA report to Detective Alvarez.
The child was his.
Rachel had known for months.
She had planned to claim Lucas was the father if she needed emotional leverage over him or legal access to Walter’s estate.
Lucas stared at her through the glass.
“You were going to use your own baby.”
“I was trying to protect my child.”
“You left an old man to die.”
“I panicked.”
“You planted evidence on me.”
“Charles forced me.”
“You ordered Walter’s injection before Charles even knew I had entered the mansion.”
Rachel’s excuses stopped.
For the first time, Lucas saw what remained when charm, beauty, and arrogance no longer worked.
Fear.
Not remorse.
Fear of consequences.
Adrian refused to defend her.
He petitioned for custody after the child’s birth and agreed to testify about the bigamy, fraud, and staged fires.
Lucas did not forgive Adrian’s involvement, but he recognized the difference between a coward who finally told the truth and a predator who never intended to.
Walter’s legal team confirmed Lucas as Emily’s biological son and the rightful beneficiary of her inheritance.
The fortune was enormous.
Lucas did not celebrate.
Money could not restore his mother’s life.
It could not erase Rachel’s betrayal.
But it could be used differently.
Walter asked Lucas to move into the mansion.
Lucas looked toward the repaired bedroom door.
“I don’t want to inherit a prison.”
Walter nodded.
“Then we change what it means.”
Together, they decided to sell most of the estate’s luxury properties and create a foundation for adults who had been exploited through guardianship fraud and private institutional abuse.
Nora agreed to direct its patient advocacy program.
Lucas returned to the machine plant long enough to thank the workers who had defended him.
His supervisor handed him an envelope.
Inside were copies of every shift record Rachel had tried to destroy.
“She came here asking us to change the dates,” the supervisor said. “Nobody believed her.”
