Chapter 4 - The Laboratory Report

Lucas wanted to break something.
Instead, he forced himself to sit.
Anger would not save Walter.
Anger would not expose Rachel.
He removed the laboratory report from inside his jacket.
The document came from a private genetics facility in Boston.
The names listed were Walter Grant, Rachel Monroe, and Lucas Bennett.
Lucas looked up sharply.
“Why was my DNA tested?”
“Because I needed to know who you were.”
The report stated that Rachel had no biological relationship to Walter.
Lucas did.
Probability of grandparentage: 99.98 percent.
Lucas stopped breathing.
“My grandparents died before I was born.”
“That is what you were told.”
Walter explained that his only daughter, Emily, had disappeared thirty-six years earlier after becoming pregnant. Walter’s son, Charles, had controlled the family and insisted Emily had run away with stolen money.
Years later, Walter discovered Emily had given birth.
The infant had been adopted under a sealed court order.
“That child was you,” Walter said.
Lucas stood abruptly.
“No. Rachel said she was your granddaughter.”
“She is Charles’s stepdaughter. No blood relation.”
The room seemed to tilt.
Rachel had approached Lucas at a charity event four years earlier. She had called their meeting fate.
Now Lucas understood.
She had known exactly who he was.
“She married me to get access to your trust.”
Walter nodded.
“Under my late wife’s will, the inheritance passes to Emily’s lawful child. That is you.”
The footsteps moved downstairs.
The men were getting closer.
Walter opened a desk drawer and removed a small recorder.
“Rachel confessed part of the plan during an argument with Charles. I recorded it.”
Before he could play it, every screen in the study went black.
The power died.
A red emergency light illuminated the room.
Then the study door locked from the outside.
A speaker crackled above them.
Rachel’s voice filled the darkness.

“Lucas, put the documents on the desk and walk away. You still have a chance to survive this.”
👉 Rachel knew exactly where Lucas was hiding—and she was ready to bury him with the mansion.
