Chapter 1 - 1:47 A.M.

My mother had a fistful of my pregnant wife’s hair when I reached our bedroom door.
I stopped so hard that rainwater from my suit splashed onto the hardwood floor.
Irene was on her knees beside our bed, one hand wrapped protectively around her three-month pregnant belly. Her pale nightgown was torn at the shoulder. Her lower lip was split. One cheek had swollen almost purple.
My sister Carla stood ten feet away, swinging a hammer into the electronic keypad of our bedroom safe.
“Give me the safe code!” Margaret screamed.
She jerked Irene’s head back.
I had already pulled out my phone.
My thumb hit record.
For several seconds, none of them knew I was standing there.
Carla raised the hammer again.
The metal head smashed into the damaged keypad.
Irene cried out when Margaret shoved her forward.
“Austin is in London,” my mother hissed. “No one is coming to save you!”
Something inside me went cold.
My meeting in London had ended nearly two days early. I had taken the first flight home and told no one because I wanted to surprise Irene.
Instead, I had walked into this.
Margaret shoved her again.
Irene hit the carpet and immediately curled around her stomach.
I crossed the room in three strides.
“GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY WIFE!”
Margaret turned.
Her face changed so completely that I almost didn't recognize her.
Carla’s hammer slipped from her hand and landed beside the safe.
My mother tried to step backward, but I caught her wrist and pulled her hand away from Irene.
“Austin—”
“Don’t.”
One word.
That was all I trusted myself to say.
I dropped beside Irene.
Her entire body was trembling.
“I’m here,” I whispered.
She looked at me as if she had been waiting to hear those words for hours.
Behind me, Margaret made a choking sound.
“She stole your things!”
I looked toward the safe.
Its electronic panel had been smashed apart.
The door was open.
Beside it sat Irene’s old leather travel suitcase.
Inside were stacks of cash, two gold bars from my father’s estate collection, jewelry, and several legal folders.
It looked exactly like a packed theft.
Except I had just watched Carla breaking into the safe.
I slowly raised my phone.
Margaret stared at it.
Carla went white.
“I’ve recorded everything.”
For the first time, neither of them had an answer.
Then I saw something that bothered me.
There were blue, green, and black folders inside the suitcase.
But one folder was missing.
A red leather document folder that had been inside that safe when I left for London.
It contained papers Irene had asked me about two weeks earlier.
At the time, I told her they were old company records.
I had been wrong.
Irene suddenly grabbed my sleeve.
Her fingers were ice cold.
“Austin…”
I leaned closer.
She glanced at Margaret.
Then at Carla.
Fear moved across her face again.
“There’s someone else,” she whispered through tears. “It wasn’t just these two.”
My mother’s expression didn't show surprise.
It showed disappointment.
As though Irene had just said something she had been warned never to say.
And that was the moment I understood something far worse than what I had walked in on.
My mother and sister hadn’t come into my bedroom at 1:47 in the morning to steal jewelry.
They had come looking for something.
May you like
And somebody else had told them exactly where to find it.
📖 At the hospital, Irene finally gave me the third person’s name—and I realized the man protecting my family’s secrets had been standing beside us for years. 👇
