Chapter 8 - THE OVERRIDE

The safe company needed less than six hours to identify the override.
That was the first piece of good news we received.
It was also terrible.
Every Wentworth family safe had been installed by Halberd Security, a vendor Martin recommended after my father died.
Their emergency override system generated one-use digital keys.
The key used at 1:36 a.m. had been requested from a Halberd administrator account.
Account owner:
MARTIN VALE — VALE LEGAL GROUP.
I read the report three times.
Detective Brooks warned me that authentication records still needed forensic verification.
“We have a digital trail,” she said. “We do not yet have a conviction.”
“I know.”
What we did have was a pattern.
Martin’s credential opened the house at 1:32.
An override linked to his account opened the safe four minutes later.
Luis saw him leave carrying a red document case at 1:39.
Then the remote access record was deleted at 6:14, after I confronted him.
Martin responded through counsel.
His statement claimed a former employee may have accessed an old Halberd account.
The employee had left Vale Legal Group eight months earlier.
Convenient.
But the more important discovery came from the safe itself.
Carla had not packed everything.
An evidence technician found a torn strip of red leather trapped behind the lower hinge.
Irene recognized it immediately.
The missing folder had been pulled against the metal edge hard enough to tear.
Brooks sent the fragment for analysis.
“Could prove it was physically here,” she said.
“It was.”
“I believe your wife. A jury requires more than belief.”
I was learning that truth and provable truth were different currencies.
That evening, Irene was discharged.
I took her to a hotel instead of home.
She didn't argue.
As we entered the room, my phone buzzed with a message from Raymond Holt.
Emergency board vote tomorrow.
Margaret planned to use my disputed proxy to appoint a new interim executive committee.
Martin would serve as special counsel.
I called Raymond.
“You know the proxy is contested.”
“I do.”
“You know the attorney presenting it lied about being inside my house.”
“Austin, the board has not verified that.”
“I have an access log.”
“You have a copied diagnostic file under criminal review.”
“A witness saw him.”
“A witness who changed his initial statement.”
That was Martin’s strategy.
Never prove himself innocent.
Just make every piece of evidence slightly arguable.
Before hanging up, Raymond said something that made my blood run cold.
“The board also received notice that company reserves may have been improperly accessed.”
“By whom?”
“We don't know yet.”
“How much?”
He hesitated.
“Four point eight million dollars.”
The same vendor Irene had found.
Alder Crest Advisory.
Suddenly the red folder, the forged proxy, and my wife’s blood were connected by a number large enough to destroy careers.
Possibly a company.
Possibly my family.

And Margaret was about to gain control of the people who could investigate it.
📖 The safe override proved the burglary was coordinated, but the missing $4.8 million gave Margaret and Martin a reason to seize the company before I could follow the money. 👇
