Chapter 18 - MAKE HER GIVE IT TO YOU

The second message was worse.
12:56 a.m.
Martin to Margaret:
If Irene refuses the code, make her give it to you. Do not leave without the packet.
My mother’s reply contained only two words.
I understand.
I sat inside the prosecutor’s conference room with Rachel and Detective Brooks.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
The message did not order Margaret to strike Irene.
It did not say pull her hair.
It did not say shove a pregnant woman to the floor.
Martin had left himself distance.
Again.
But he had directed the confrontation.
He knew Irene might resist.
He demanded completion anyway.
The next recovered exchange was between Martin and Carla.
1:07 a.m.
Carla: Keypad isn’t giving.
Martin: I’m coming.
That aligned with Luis’s gate record.
1:32 entry.
1:36 safe override.
1:39 exit.
The chronology locked together.
Brooks leaned back.
“We now have coordination.”
Rachel added, “And potential evidence of conspiracy tied to the burglary.”
I thought I would feel triumphant.
I didn't.
I saw Irene on the floor again.
Margaret had been given an instruction.
Then she made choices of her own.
Martin manipulated.
Margaret obeyed.
Carla participated.
No piece of evidence allowed me to give any of them innocence.
There was another message.
This one had not been deleted.
Martin wrote to Margaret at 2:03 a.m., after I had already arrived.
Do not discuss the folder. Say Irene packed the valuables before you intervened.
He knew I was home by then.
Someone had told him.
Margaret replied:
Austin recorded us.
Martin:
Then we attack context.
That sentence explained the next two weeks.
The edited video.
The affidavits.
The board narrative.
The claim that my recording started too late.
Martin had built his defense before the ambulance reached the hospital.
The court granted investigators access to limited portions of his communications under the crime-fraud exception.
His attorneys appealed.
But the wall around him had cracked.
Then Carla’s new attorney called Rachel.
“My client is willing to make a proffer.”
I stared at the phone.
“What does she want?”
“Consideration.”
Of course.
Carla had spent years accepting money she now called family distributions.
She had swung a hammer into my safe while my pregnant wife begged for help.
Now consequences were real.
Rachel warned me.
“Her cooperation won't erase what she did.”
“I don't want it erased.”
“What do you want?”
“The truth.”
Carla’s attorney scheduled the meeting.
Before hanging up, he added one condition.
Carla would speak only if Margaret was not told in advance.
The alliance had broken.

And the first thing my sister admitted was that Martin had lied to both of them about what the red folder contained.
📖 Carla finally broke from our mother, but her confession revealed that Martin had used a lie about Irene to turn old family resentment into violence. 👇
