Chapter 17 - MY FATHER'S WARNING

The first recovered email arrived four days later.
Martin had fought production.
The judge ordered a limited review.
Vale Legal Group’s backup vendor produced messages Martin apparently believed were gone.
The oldest was from my father.
Charles wrote with the bluntness I remembered.
Martin—
Effective immediately, do not approve, direct, or advise payment of any outside consulting expense without written board authorization.
The Alder Crest entries are unsupported.
You will deliver the full file Monday.
We will address your continued role separately.
Charles.
I read it until the words blurred.
Alder Crest.
Six years ago.
Two years before the first transfer our accountants had found.
My father knew the name.
Rachel cautioned me.
“This shows concern. It does not yet prove termination.”
Another email did.
Three days later, Charles sent a message to our board secretary requesting a resolution withdrawing Martin’s 2019 financial authority.
The attachment was missing.
But the request existed.
Martin replied:
Understood. I will circulate the final resolution.
He never did.
At least not in the archive we possessed.
My anger became something quieter.
My father had seen the fire.
Then he died.
And Martin remained in the building holding the extinguisher.
I called Margaret through her attorney.
For once, I asked only one question.
“Did Dad ever tell you he distrusted Martin?”
Her response came through counsel.
“No.”
I didn't believe her.
Carla’s attorney gave the same answer.
Then Rachel received a surprising message.
Carla wanted separate representation.
She had fired the lawyer Martin arranged.
That mattered.
For the first time, the two women from my bedroom were not moving together.
I told Irene.
She was still living in the rental.
Our conversations were careful.
Practical.
But she answered every time I called.
“Carla’s scared,” she said.
“Of prison?”
“Maybe.”
“Or Martin?”
“Maybe both.”
I wanted to drive to her apartment.
I didn't.
Instead I asked how she felt.
“Tired.”
“And the baby?”
“Strong heartbeat yesterday.”
Relief moved through me.
Then she said something I had not expected.
“I remembered another thing Martin said that night.”
“What?”
“He told your mother, ‘You have until two before the London office opens.’”
My pulse changed.
London office.
My fake IT pickup had occurred because someone needed my tablet.
The forged proxy was authenticated while I was abroad.
And Martin had given Margaret a deadline tied to London.
The burglary was not a desperate midnight decision.
It was synchronized with a digital operation happening six time zones away.
Rachel forwarded Irene’s statement to investigators.
That evening, prosecutors obtained authority to examine the phones seized from Margaret and Carla after their arrests.
One recovered message had been deleted.
Digital forensics restored it.
Sender: Martin Vale.
Time: 12:41 a.m.
Text: Get the original packet. Use her bag. Make the theft believable.

There was no longer any reasonable way to call the suitcase a misunderstanding.
📖 Martin’s deleted message proved the frame-up was planned, but the next recovered instruction showed he expected my mother to use force if Irene refused. 👇
