Chapter 11 - THE EDITED VIDEO

By noon the next day, the internet had seen me grab my mother.

It had not seen what she did first.

A twelve-second clip appeared online showing Margaret stumbling backward while I held her wrist.

The opening seconds—her dragging Irene by the hair—were gone.

So was Carla hitting the safe.

The video began with me shouting.

It ended with Margaret saying Irene had stolen from me.

I stared at the screen until Irene took my phone away.

“This is what they wanted.”

The headline beneath the clip described a “Wentworth family dispute involving alleged elder abuse and missing assets.”

My wife’s injuries were mentioned in one sentence.

Margaret’s wrist brace appeared in every photograph.

I had made the mistake myself.

After the board meeting, I sent the original recording to Raymond Holt and two outside directors because I thought seeing the truth would force them to reject Margaret’s proxy.

One of those copies had passed through Martin’s legal-review portal.

Now an edited version was public.

Detective Brooks was furious.

“You should have preserved the original and stopped distributing it.”

“I know.”

“You handed them material they could weaponize.”

“I know.”

Irene sat silently on the hotel couch.

That silence hurt worse than anger.

Reporters gathered outside our house.

Someone posted Irene’s professional history online and accused her of marrying me for money.

Anonymous comments called the pregnancy a strategy.

One message said she deserved what happened.

Irene turned the phone facedown.

“I want to leave.”

“We can move hotels.”

“No. I mean leave all of this.”

I knew what she meant.

The company.

My mother.

The war.

For one moment, I wanted the same thing.

Then Brooks called.

The original video on my phone had passed forensic preservation.

No edits.

Continuous metadata.

It did not show Martin, but it clearly showed Margaret assaulting Irene and Carla attacking the safe before I touched either woman.

The edited clip could hurt my reputation.

It could not erase the original.

That was the reward.

The twist came an hour later.

Raymond called me personally.

He sounded shaken.

“The board’s forensic accountant found the first Alder Crest transfer.”

“When?”

“Four years ago.”

“How much?”

“Two hundred thousand.”

“Who approved it?”

He hesitated.

“Martin drafted the authorization.”

“And Margaret?”

“Received a distribution three days later.”

My mother had spent two days insisting the violence was about protecting family property.

Now I had reason to believe family property had been moving into her account for years.

I asked the obvious question.

“How much has she received?”

Raymond answered quietly.

“We’re still counting.”

📖 The leaked video damaged my name, but the first financial trail reached my mother’s own bank account—and what followed made innocence impossible to claim. 👇
