Chapter 1 - The Cry Beneath the Boxes

The crying was so faint I almost mistook it for wind.

I had returned to our house in Colorado a night early after a business trip was canceled. The garage door stood halfway open, cold air sweeping over stacks of moving boxes Taylor claimed she was organizing.

Then I heard it again.

“Daddy…”

I dropped my suitcase.

The sound came from the chest freezer in the corner.

I ran across the garage and lifted the lid.

My seven-year-old daughter was curled inside.

“Lily… what happened to you?”

She wore only a thin gray hoodie and pajama pants. Her lips were pale. Her entire body shook as I pulled her into my arms.

The freezer was unplugged, but the inside was still freezing cold.

Lily clung to my neck.

“Daddy…”

“I’ve got you.”

She stared toward the house with pure terror.

Then I noticed something beneath the blanket where she had been lying.

A dark stain.

A torn medical bracelet.

And a child’s red shoe that did not belong to Lily.

Taylor appeared in the garage entrance.

She stopped when she saw my daughter in my arms.

Her face went white.

“You weren’t supposed to come back tonight.”

I looked from her to the freezer.

“What have you been hiding from me?”

She took one step backward.

I placed Lily behind me and reached toward a nearby box for my phone.

Instead, my hand touched an older device wrapped in a towel.

Its screen suddenly lit up.

One audio file appeared.

LAST NIGHT—11:43 P.M.

Taylor stared at it.

“David, don’t open that.”

Her voice sounded more frightened than Lily’s.

And that was when I understood the freezer was not where the nightmare began.

It was where Taylor had tried to hide the evidence.
