Chapter 15 - The Trial of Evelyn Morgan
The trial lasted nine weeks.
Rachel testified first.
She described the clinic, the stolen pregnancies, the basement shaft, and the years she spent hiding.
Taylor testified next.
She admitted intercepting Rachel’s letters, using forged records, drugging Lily, and placing her inside the freezer.
Her lawyer argued she had tried to save Lily from Evelyn.
The prosecutor asked:
“Why didn’t she call 911?”
Taylor had no answer.
Because fear explained some of her choices.
Self-interest explained the rest.
Ava testified by recorded interview.
She showed where Leonard kept the old phone.
She explained how she protected Lily in the basement.
Sam chose not to testify.
His records were enough.
I took the stand last.
Evelyn watched me with the same calm expression she had worn my whole life.
The prosecutor asked what I saw when I opened the freezer.
“My daughter.”
“Anything else?”
“The end of every lie I had accepted because it came from someone I trusted.”
Evelyn’s attorney tried to blame me for traveling too often.
He suggested I ignored warning signs.
He was right about one thing.
I had missed them.
But parental failure was not permission for abuse.
The jury found Evelyn guilty on every major count.
Leonard accepted a plea after the database linked him to multiple deaths.
Taylor pleaded guilty and received a reduced sentence for cooperation, but the judge denied early release.
Mark Carter received prison time.
Susan received probation and supervised family services because she had ultimately protected Sam and cooperated fully.
At sentencing, Evelyn asked to speak.
She looked at Lily.
“I gave you everything.”
Lily held my hand.
Then answered from the gallery.

“No. You took everything and called it a gift.”
For the first time, my mother had nothing to say.
