Chapter 14 - The Family Hearing
Sam entered temporary protective care.
He asked to remain with Susan during the investigation.
The court allowed supervised contact because she had surrendered and protected him from Mark during the final standoff.
Biology did not erase ten years of attachment.
Rachel understood.
So did I.
Lily met Sam in a therapy room.
They sat across from each other.
“You knew Grandma was weird?” Lily asked.
Sam nodded.
“She made me memorize your blood type.”
Lily thought about that.
Then handed him a coloring pencil.
Children could begin where adults only knew how to end.
A family court hearing addressed Lily, Sam, and Ava.
Rachel sought recognition as Lily and Sam’s biological mother.
I sought custody protections.
Ava asked to stay with Rachel temporarily.
Taylor requested visitation with Lily.
Lily said no.
The judge respected her answer.
Taylor cried quietly.
For once, tears did not change the outcome.
Evelyn was charged with kidnapping, reproductive fraud, attempted murder, child abuse, conspiracy, and financial crimes.
Leonard faced additional medical charges.
The database led investigators to the other children.
Three had loving families who never knew the truth.
Two were in private institutions.
One had died during an illegal procedure.
The final two were living overseas under false records.
International authorities began searches.
Then prosecutors discovered the most damaging file.
A video of Evelyn speaking to my grandfather before his death.
He knew about the embryo program.
He had funded the first phase.
My family fortune—the thing Evelyn claimed she was protecting—had been built partly through stolen lives.
I had spent years believing my grandfather was honorable.
The video showed otherwise.
He told Evelyn:
“Children are temporary. Legacy is permanent.”
Lily watched from the doorway before I could stop the playback.
She looked at me.
“Is that what our family thinks?”
I turned off the screen.
“No.”
