Chapter 13 - The Road Through the Snow

A winter storm closed the highway north.
The Carters turned onto a mountain route.
Police followed at a distance.
I rode with Detective Cole.
Rachel stayed beside Lily and Ava at the clinic.
Taylor remained in custody but agreed to cooperate.
The SUV stopped near an abandoned ranger station.
Mark Carter called me.
“You destroyed everything.”
“You took my son.”
“We raised him.”
“You were paid to watch him.”
“We loved him.”
“Then don’t put him in danger.”
Susan could be heard crying in the background.
Mark said Evelyn promised they could legally adopt Sam after my death.
My death.
Another plan I had never known existed.
“How was I supposed to die?”
Silence.
Then Susan spoke.
“The garage.”
The chest freezer had been intended for me too.
Evelyn planned to stage an accident.
Taylor was supposed to find my body.
Afterward, Lily would be declared unstable and removed.
Sam would become the uncontested heir.
The entire family structure was designed to collapse on command.
Mark agreed to release Sam if police allowed them to leave.
Detective Cole refused immunity.
The call ended.
We approached the ranger station.
A shot broke a window.
Mark was armed.
Sam shouted from inside.
“Dad, stop!”
He called the man Dad.
The word hurt.
But love could not be corrected by biology.
I stepped into view.
“Sam, my name is David.”
“I know who you are.”
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Do you want to leave?”
He looked at Mark.
Then Susan.
He loved them.
He also feared them.
“I want everybody to stop lying.”
That sentence belonged to every child in this story.
Susan lowered her weapon first.
Mark did not.
He aimed at me.
Sam pushed his arm.
The shot struck the ceiling.
Police entered.
The Carters surrendered.
Sam stood in the snow without a coat.
I wrapped mine around him.
He did not hug me.
I did not expect him to.
Then he asked one question.
“Is Lily really my sister?”
“Yes.”
May you like
He nodded slowly.
“Good.”
