Chapter 12 - The Son I Never Knew

The deleted file was partially recovered.

Male.

Born in Denver.

Current age: ten.

No name.

No photograph.

The implantation record listed Rachel as the biological mother.

She stared at the screen.

“I had another child?”

Leonard had erased the pregnancy from her memory using sedation, confinement, and false medical treatment.

She remembered months missing from her life.

She had been told she suffered a breakdown.

Instead, she had delivered a son.

Evelyn knew.

I confronted her in jail.

“Where is he?”

My mother looked genuinely surprised that we had found the file.

Then she smiled.

“He is safe.”

“With whom?”

“A family who understands his value.”

“He is not an asset.”

“You keep saying that as if the world agrees.”

I slammed my hands against the table.

“Give me his name.”

She leaned closer.

“Samuel.”

The name hit me.

Sam Carter.

The ten-year-old boy who lived three houses away.

His parents had moved into our neighborhood four years earlier.

He played with Lily.

He attended her birthday parties.

I had taught him to ride a bike.

Evelyn had placed my son beside me and watched me fail to recognize him.

His legal parents, Mark and Susan Carter, were employees of one of her foundations.

Police reached their house.

Empty.

A note waited on the kitchen table.

WE KEPT HIM SAFE UNTIL YOU BROKE THE AGREEMENT.

No one knew what agreement they meant.

Then Rachel remembered.

Before her first procedure, Evelyn made her sign a document promising never to contact any children produced from the study.

She signed while heavily medicated.

The Carters believed Rachel’s return voided their protection.

They were fleeing.

A traffic camera captured their SUV heading toward Wyoming.

Sam sat in the back seat.

He looked frightened.

Lily saw the image and pointed.

“That’s the boy Grandma said could replace me.”

Replace her.

Evelyn had kept Sam nearby as a backup heir.

If Lily died, Sam would inherit.

My mother had never planned to protect either child.

Only the trust.
