Chapter 19 - The Morning After the Storm

Five years passed.

Lily turned twelve.

She became stronger without becoming hard.

She still wore hoodies, but not to hide bruises.

She liked the pockets.

Sam was fifteen and learning to call Rachel Mom.

He still called me David most days.

Once, during a school ceremony, he introduced me as his father.

Neither of us mentioned it afterward.

We did not need to.

Ava became fearless in public and anxious in private.

Rachel understood both sides.

The four of us built something no document had planned.

One winter evening, snow covered Colorado.

The power went out.

Lily froze when the house became dark.

I found her standing in the kitchen, unable to breathe.

I did not turn on my phone flashlight immediately.

I took her hand.

“You’re not in the garage.”

“I know.”

“The freezer is gone.”

“I know.”

“The door is open.”

She looked toward the hallway.

Morning light had not come yet.

But the front door stood unlocked.

She breathed slowly.

Then she walked to it herself and opened it.

Cold air entered.

She did not run.

She stood there until the panic passed.

That was courage.

Not forgetting fear.

Choosing what to do while it remained.
