Chapter 8 - The Freezer Was Built for Someone Else

The chest freezer had been purchased eight years earlier.

Before Lily entered our home.

Before Ava’s transplant.

Before the basement room was built.

It had never been meant for Lily.

It was meant for Rachel.

The garage floor beneath it contained signs of a sealed access hatch.

Police removed the freezer.

Underneath was a narrow concrete shaft.

At the bottom, they found a woman’s necklace, a broken restraint, and dried blood.

No body.

The necklace carried the initials R.M.

Rachel Morgan.

Taylor stared at it and began sobbing.

“She escaped.”

“How do you know?”

“My mother told me she died there.”

“You believed her?”

“I was twenty-eight and terrified.”

“You were old enough to call the police.”

Taylor looked down.

“I wanted Lily.”

That sentence destroyed the last excuse between us.

She had not remained silent only because she feared Evelyn.

She benefited.

She received a daughter.

A wealthy husband.

A family identity.

Rachel lost everything.

Ava had seen part of the truth.

That was why she was kept in the basement.

She had witnessed Leonard return to the house and open the hidden shaft.

Lily found her.

The girls began sharing information.

Taylor discovered them and panicked.

She sedated Lily, planning to hide her in the unplugged freezer while moving Ava.

She claimed she intended to return within minutes.

But Evelyn arrived.

The argument delayed them.

Then I came home.

The recording on the old phone had been made by Ava.

She hid the device inside the garage box because she believed Lily’s father might find it.

A seven-year-old child trusted me more than my own wife did.

Police issued warrants for Leonard, Rachel, and Ava.

Rachel was officially treated as a missing victim.

Then a call came from a rural Colorado clinic.

A woman matching Rachel’s description had arrived with a wounded child.

The child was Ava.

The woman gave one message before disappearing.

Tell David not to trust Evelyn’s arrest.

She wanted to be caught.

That warning came too late.

Evelyn had already surrendered voluntarily.

And inside the police station, she asked for one person.

Not me.

May you like

Not Taylor.

Lily.
