Chapter 9 - The Confession My Mother Wanted Recorded

Evelyn refused to speak unless Lily was present.
Detective Cole denied the request.
My mother smiled.
“Then Rachel dies.”
I watched from behind one-way glass.
She looked calm.
Prepared.
Her arrest was part of the plan.
I entered the room.
“Where is Rachel?”
“Alive.”
“Where?”
“Where Leonard cannot reach her yet.”
“You built the system that trapped her.”
“I corrected a mistake.”
“You mean a person.”
Evelyn folded her hands.
“Rachel was unstable.”
“She was a teenager you used.”
“She agreed to the procedure.”
“She could not agree to having her child stolen.”
My mother’s eyes hardened.
“She would have ruined everything.”
“What is everything?”
“The family.”
I laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“You married me to my half-sister.”
“I created stability.”
“You created victims.”
Evelyn leaned forward.
“You think Taylor is innocent?”
“No.”
“You think Rachel is?”
“She was seventeen.”
“She returned years later and demanded Lily.”
“She was Lily’s mother.”
“She wanted the trust.”
I didn’t believe her.
But that was what Evelyn wanted.
Doubt.
She slid a document across the table.
Rachel had filed a secret claim to my grandfather’s estate.
The signature looked real.
But I had learned what this family could forge.
Then Evelyn spoke carefully.
“Ask yourself why Rachel took Ava instead of coming for Lily.”
Before I could answer, alarms sounded outside the interview room.
The station lost power.
Emergency lights flashed.
Detective Cole rushed in.
A prisoner transport door had opened remotely.
Evelyn remained seated.
She had never planned to escape.
She wanted someone else released.
Down the hall, Taylor’s cell stood empty.
Security footage showed a masked man leading her outside.
Leonard.
My mother smiled.
“I told you my arrest mattered.”
“You helped him take Taylor.”
“No.”
May you like
She looked toward the camera.
“I helped Taylor go where Rachel has been waiting.”
