Chapter 16 - The House Without Locks

We sold the suburban house.

Lily never wanted to see the garage again.

Rachel and I did not become a couple.

Too much had been stolen for us to pretend we could return to the night we met.

But we became parents together.

Carefully.

Honestly.

She moved into a small house nearby.

Lily spent time with both of us.

Sam remained connected to Susan while building a relationship with Rachel and me.

He called me David.

I accepted that.

Fatherhood was not a word I could demand.

Ava stayed with Rachel and eventually entered permanent guardianship with her.

She had no safe biological parent available.

Rachel became the person Ava chose.

The old phone was entered into evidence.

After the trial, Detective Cole returned it to Lily.

She did not want it.

We placed it in a locked archive at the child advocacy center, where its recordings helped train investigators to recognize hidden family abuse.

The freezer was destroyed.

Not sold.

Not donated.

Destroyed.

Lily watched from a safe distance as workers crushed it at a recycling facility.

She squeezed my hand.

“Can it ever open again?”

“No.”

That night she slept without nightmares for the first time in months.

But healing remained uneven.

She hated cold rooms.

She panicked when doors locked.

She checked the garage twice before bed even in our new house.

I attended therapy with her.

I did not tell her to move on.

I learned to stay.
