Bethany broke first.
She accepted a formal proffer with prosecutors.
No immunity.
No promise she would avoid charges.
Truthful cooperation could be considered.
She admitted creating the signature package.
She admitted using my security key.
She admitted drafting the conflict waiver.
She admitted knowing I had not approved the trust investment.
Then the prosecutor asked about Sophie.
Bethany cried.
I did not care that she cried.
I cared whether she told the truth.
“She came into Dad’s hallway.”
“What happened?”
“She saw Mom with the binder.”
“And?”
“She asked why Grandma had Daddy’s papers.”
“What did you do?”
“Mom grabbed her.”
“And you?”
Bethany closed her eyes.
“I grabbed the other arm.”
That matched the video.
“Why?”
“To stop her running to Daniel.”
Then the question I had been waiting for.
“What happened in the bathroom?”
Bethany covered her face.
“Mom told her to stop crying.”
“How?”
“She covered her mouth.”
“Did you strike Sophie?”
Long silence.
“Yes.”
My hands went numb.
“How?”
“She kept screaming. I slapped her.”
One slap.
The bruise on Sophie’s cheek.
Bethany’s “I taught her a lesson.”
Admitted.
“Did Linda tell you to?”
“No.”

Bethany owned it.
Then:
“Did Robert know Sophie was in the bathroom?”
“Yes.”
“Did he tell you to keep her there?”
“He said, ‘Five minutes. Just keep her quiet until we finish.’”
My father.
Then Bethany described the circular bruises.
Linda gripped one arm.
Bethany the other.
Sophie twisted.
They tightened.
No specialized torture.
No mystery device.
Hands.
Family hands.
Then the prosecutor asked why Bethany said I had to leave the house afterward.
“Dad told me if Daniel saw the office files, the bank deal was dead.”

Then came an information twist.
Bethany said Linda wanted to stop before the birthday.
“What?”
“Mom was scared.”
“When?”
“The night before.”
Linda reportedly told Robert the plan was going too far.
Robert refused.

Did that make Linda less responsible?
No.
She still showed up.
Still intercepted warnings.

I had never heard of that plan.

Then Rachel told me something uncomfortable.
“Bethany admitting the slap doesn’t mean you get to treat her as disposable forever.”
“I can’t think about forgiveness.”
“I didn’t say forgiveness.”
