Chapter 20 - LINDA EXPLAINS LOVE

Linda wore a floral dress to court.
Not the birthday dress.
Close enough that my stomach tightened.
She began with Sophie.
“I love my granddaughter.”
I believed her.
She described sleepovers.
Hospital visits.
The night Sophie had pneumonia.
Hannah’s funeral.
Months when I traveled.
All real.
Then she described Parker Development.
A company Robert built from nothing.
Employees who had worked there twenty years.
Families depending on it.
Projects.
Debt.
Fear.
“We were not stealing Sophie’s money.”
“What were you doing?” her attorney asked.
“Borrowing from family assets with the intention to repay.”
Then:
“Did Daniel approve?”
Linda paused.
“We believed he would.”
Not yes.
Her lawyer moved carefully.
She admitted accessing my email.
Admitted receiving bank notices.
Admitted reading them.
Why not forward them?
“Daniel was traveling.”
Why upload the forged waiver?
“Bethany said Daniel’s certificate reflected his existing consent.”
Then prosecutors played Linda’s bank call.
Has Daniel approved?
He will once he sees the final numbers.
Linda closed her eyes.
The prosecutor asked:
“So at that moment, he had not approved?”
“No.”
There.
Then the birthday.
“Why did you grab Sophie?”
“She was running.”
The video showed Sophie initially standing still.
“Why did you delete seventeen minutes?”
“I panicked.”
“About what?”
“The financial paperwork.”
“Why put Sophie in the bathroom?”
“She was screaming.”
“Why cover her mouth?”
Linda began crying.
“I wanted her to stop.”
The courtroom was silent.
“Did Sophie know what the trust document meant?”
“No.”
“Then why did her seeing it matter?”
“Because she would tell Daniel we had his papers.”
Exactly.
Not a child exposing financial terms.
A child exposing possession.
Then the prosecutor asked:
“Why didn’t you simply stop the transaction when Sophie saw you?”
Linda stared toward Robert.
For the first time, she looked directly at him.
“Because Robert said we were too close.”
Robert’s jaw tightened.
“Too close to what?”
“Saving the company.”
There.
Then came the twist.
Linda admitted she had planned to take Sophie home with her after the party.
Not kidnap.
Not hide.
Simply keep her overnight as previously arranged.
“Why?”
“So Daniel wouldn’t hear something confusing until we could explain.”
My stomach turned.
They intended to delay Sophie telling me until after Monday’s lender deadline.
Even after the bathroom.
Even after the bruises.
The silence plan extended beyond minutes.
Then Linda said:
“I never told Bethany to hit her.”
I believed that.
Bethany had admitted acting herself.
Again, responsibility differed.
Then Linda looked at me.
“I thought once the company survived, we could repair everything.”
That sentence captured the entire disaster.
Commit harm now.
Repair later.
Borrow money now.
Repay later.
Lie now.
Explain later.
Silence a child now.
Apologize later.
The future became permission for anything.
Then Linda stepped down.
Sophie was at daycare eating crackers.

I was grateful she would never hear her grandmother call silence temporary.
📖 Linda admitted she knowingly hid the lack of my approval and planned to keep Sophie away until the lender deadline, turning “temporary” silence into deliberate coercion. 👇
