Chapter 18 - THE CHARGES

The charges came in stages.

Bethany first.

Child assault-related charge.

Identity and financial-fraud counts tied to the signature package.

Conspiracy allegations.

She surrendered through counsel.

No dramatic arrest at home.

No cameras in Sophie’s face.

Linda followed.

Charges related to fraud, identity misuse, evidence tampering, and Sophie’s restraint.

Robert faced financial conspiracy and obstruction-related charges plus allegations connected to keeping Sophie away while the transaction continued.

The exact counts differed.

Good.

They had not done identical things.

Bethany’s cooperation continued.

That could affect sentencing later.

Not guilt.

Linda rejected a plea.

Robert rejected one too.

They believed a jury would see a family trying to rescue a company.

Maybe jurors would understand that.

Understanding motive does not erase method.

Then family court extended no-contact orders.

Linda requested supervised visits with Sophie.

Dr. Levin opposed them for now.

Sophie still hid when she saw photographs from the birthday.

She no longer feared every bathroom.

Progress.

But Linda’s name changed her body.

That mattered.

The judge denied contact temporarily.

Linda cried in court.

I believed the tears.

Still supported the order.

Then came my own consequence.

Bethany’s attorney filed a complaint against me for striking her.

Police had already reviewed the party footage.

I gave a statement.

I did not claim I forgot.

I hit her.

The prosecutor ultimately treated the incident separately under applicable law and circumstances.

I accepted responsibility through counsel for my conduct and entered a diversionary anger-management arrangement rather than pretending protective anger made me untouchable.

Some relatives were furious.

“She hit your baby.”

“Yes.”

“You’re letting them punish you too?”

“I’m letting my conduct be evaluated too.”

That decision changed how the public story looked.

Daniel Parker was no longer asking everyone to believe only his violence made sense.

I had done wrong in response to wrong.

Different scale.

Different context.

Still my choice.

Then Sophie’s therapist gave me a note.

Not from Sophie.

An observation.

Sophie now expects Daniel to respond calmly when she reports minor problems.

That felt like an award.

I framed nothing.

I simply kept doing it.

Spilled juice.

Tantrum.

Broken toy.

No explosion.

No “Daddy will destroy them.”

Safety became boring.

That was the goal.

Then Robert’s company entered restructuring.

Not collapse.

A lender group accepted a sale of the stalled retail center.

Exactly the option Marcus had recommended months earlier.

Parker Development could survive.

At a painful loss.

Robert had risked Sophie’s trust to avoid an outcome the company ultimately endured anyway.

That fact made everything feel even more senseless.

Pride had cost more than the sale ever would.

Then prosecutors announced trial dates.

Bethany might testify against our parents.
