Chapter 21 - ROBERT DOESN’T TESTIFY

Robert did not testify.

His right.

His lawyers focused on records.

They argued he modeled financing options but did not create forged signatures.

True.

Bethany did.

They argued he never physically touched Sophie in the hallway.

True.

The video showed him nearby.

They argued he did not tell Bethany to slap Sophie.

True.

They argued the phrase “keep her quiet” was ambiguous.

Maybe.

Then prosecutors built his role through independent evidence.

SOPHIE OPTION spreadsheet.

His scanner.

His lender communications.

Marcus’s testimony.

The hard drive.

His text:

Keep her away from Daniel until we finish.

His instruction to destroy project files.

His thrown glass after I returned with Sophie.

No single act made him Linda or Bethany.

Together, they made him part of the plan.

Then Marcus testified.

“Did Robert know Daniel had rejected trust funding?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I told him.”

“Did he continue?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He said Daniel would thank him when the company survived.”

Again.

Future gratitude used as substitute for present consent.

Then the lender officer testified.

Robert had represented that Parker Development expected a $1.6 million related-party capital commitment.

The officer asked whether all approvals were obtained.

Robert answered:

“Documentation is being finalized.”

Not:

No.

Not:

Daniel refused.

A carefully incomplete truth.

Then came the most damaging independent record.

An internal Parker Development meeting had been transcribed automatically.

Robert:

“Once Linda is trustee, Daniel becomes irrelevant to the capital decision.”

Marcus:

“First Atlantic will still care.”

Robert:

“Then show them Daniel agrees.”

Marcus:

“He doesn’t.”

Long silence.

Robert:

“Then find a structure that works.”

He did not say forge Daniel.

But he knew Daniel did not consent and directed the team to bypass the problem.

Then closing arguments approached.

The defense succeeded in excluding one Bethany email because authentication could not be completed.

Good.

Weak evidence should go.

The strongest evidence remained.

Then my own company completed its governance review.

I had not committed fraud.

I had not knowingly authorized Beatriz? wrong story. Need stay Parker. I had not knowingly authorized family access to trust systems.

But the report criticized my personal credential practices.

I accepted it.

My board offered me a larger executive role in the future.

I declined.

Not because I stopped working.

Because Sophie had spent too much of her first two years learning Daddy was always somewhere else.

Then she surprised me.

“Daddy go work tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

Her face fell.

“I come back before dinner.”

“Promise?”

“Yes.”

I came back at 5:42.

Not perfect.

On time enough.

She ran to the door.

That felt more important than any title.

Then Rachel called.

The jury would receive the case the next morning.

For the first time in months, there was nothing left for me to do.

No email to find.

No camera to restore.

No person to confront.

May you like

Only wait.

📖 Robert stayed silent, but his own business records showed he knowingly pushed past my refusal, leaving the jury to decide how far that made him responsible. 👇
