Chapter 1 - THE PLATE

The plate hit the stainless-steel sink with a crack that made my fourteen-month-old daughter flinch.

Vanessa grabbed Sophie before I could take my second step through the hallway.

“DO IT AGAIN! RIGHT NOW!”

Her open hand struck Sophie across the cheek.

My daughter toppled from the low kitchen stool and hit the floor crying.

For half a second, I stopped breathing.

I had come home early because a client canceled dinner. Vanessa wasn't expecting me until nine. I was still wearing my dark suit, my keys in one hand, when Sophie saw me standing in the doorway.

Her face crumpled.

“DADDY!”

She reached both arms toward me.

Vanessa bent for her.

I crossed the kitchen before she could touch my daughter again.

I caught Vanessa's wrist and pulled her hand away.

“What the hell are you doing?”

“She dropped another plate.”

Sophie was sobbing behind my legs.

“She is fourteen months old.”

“She knows exactly what she's doing.”

Vanessa pointed around me.

“SHE'S A LIAR!”

Something in me snapped.

I slapped Vanessa once.

Fast.

Hard.

She staggered against the counter, staring at me with one hand pressed to her reddening cheek.

I immediately turned away from her.

Sophie mattered more.

I lifted my daughter from the floor and held her against my chest. Her little fingers locked around my shirt collar.

“I've got you.”

Her breathing came in broken little gasps.

Then she whispered something that made the rage leave my body and something colder replace it.

“Daddy… she didn't do it alone…”

I froze.

Sophie was young, but she spoke unusually early. Most of her words were simple—Daddy, milk, no, up. That sentence was too complete.

Too specific.

And it sounded repeated.

Vanessa heard it too.

Her expression changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

I looked at her.

“Who taught her to say that?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Nobody.”

I watched her eyes move toward the hallway.

Just once.

But I saw it.

And suddenly I remembered a conversation I'd had six weeks earlier with a man named Eric Dawson.

Vanessa's first husband.

The husband she'd told me was dead.

Except Eric hadn't been dead when he called me.

He'd been terrified.

And the last thing he'd said before hanging up had been almost identical.

I tightened my arms around Sophie.

“Your first husband said the exact same thing.”

Vanessa's face drained white.

For the first time since I'd known her, my wife had absolutely nothing to say.

Then a floorboard creaked in the hallway behind me.

Vanessa looked past my shoulder.

May you like

And smiled.

📖 I thought catching Vanessa hurting Sophie was the worst thing waiting inside my house, but the person stepping from that hallway changed who I could trust. 👇
