Chapter 23 - THE LICENSING VOTE

I asked the board to postpone the licensing vote.

It cost us immediately.

The leading bidders threatened to walk.

Our stock valuation dipped.

Employees began asking whether the company was unstable.

Mercer had built his strategy around a truth every business leader hates admitting:

Doing the right thing can be expensive.

Julia and I recommended an independent review of every bidder's beneficial ownership and relationships with Northstar.

I recused myself from parts of the process involving my personal dispute.

That surprised Mercer.

He expected me to seize control.

Instead, I surrendered some of it.

Transparency became stronger than dominance.

The review found Northstar's undisclosed investment in one bidder.

That bidder was removed from consideration pending further investigation.

Mercer's financial objective collapsed.

Not because I outsmarted him in a dramatic confrontation.

Because conflict rules were finally applied to information he had hidden.

Then investigators obtained the decisive financial link.

Charles had transferred Northstar money to Vanessa under consulting agreements.

Vanessa used portions of those funds for household payments, legal preparations, and payments connected to Nathan's debt.

Martin received management fees from Northstar while accessing Sophie's medical information without appropriate justification.

Each piece had existed separately.

Now they connected.

Still missing was proof Mercer personally directed the manipulation of my family.

Vanessa said he did.

Charles said he did.

Mercer denied it.

Their testimony alone was compromised.

We needed independent evidence.

Emily's records suggested Mercer knew.

Eric believed Mercer financed the earlier scheme against him.

But belief wasn't proof.

Then Eric remembered something.

During his divorce from Vanessa, he had kept an old company server because of a separate tax dispute.

Dawson Medical Logistics had provided secure videoconferencing services for executives.

Martin once used Eric's system for a Northstar meeting.

The archived server still existed in evidence storage from Eric's civil case.

Nobody knew whether relevant data survived.

A forensic examination was authorized through proper legal channels.

One recovered calendar record showed a meeting.

Mercer.

Martin.

Charles.

Vanessa.

Date: two weeks before Vanessa approached Nathan.

The meeting title:

CARTER SUCCESSION STRATEGY.

My pulse hammered.

A calendar title wasn't enough.

But an automatically generated meeting transcript fragment had also survived.

Only forty-three seconds.

Mercer's voice was being authenticated.

The clearest sentence was:

“If Carter won't sell voluntarily, create circumstances where the board stops trusting his judgment.”

That was the missing link.

Not every crime.

Not every act.

But the strategy.

Mercer had directed the attack on my credibility.

And the licensing vote had been the prize.

📖 With Mercer's own words finally recovered, we had the missing link—but Vanessa was still gone, carrying one truth that could determine what happened to her. 👇
