Chapter 11 - THE BOARDROOM WITNESS

Dr. Elaine Brooks was sitting beside Northstar's attorney.

My daughter's pediatrician.

The woman who had documented Sophie's injuries.

For one horrible second, I thought Vanessa had turned her.

Elaine saw my expression.

“Daniel, I'm here under subpoena.”

That changed everything.

Northstar's counsel wasn't claiming Elaine supported Vanessa.

He wanted her records.

The board's independent counsel immediately restricted discussion to matters relevant to corporate governance.

Vanessa wasn't present.

Martin was.

He sat at the far end of the table in a charcoal suit.

I hadn't seen him since discovering the deleted kitchen footage.

He looked at me as though we were strangers.

Northstar's attorney presented the allegations.

My admitted assault on Vanessa.

My recent medical concern about possible sedation.

My “increasingly paranoid accusations” against business associates.

Then Martin spoke.

“I've become concerned Daniel may be experiencing severe stress.”

I almost laughed.

Instead, I asked one question.

“Have you ever treated me?”

“No.”

“Then you're not qualified to diagnose me.”

The independent counsel cut off further medical speculation.

That was our first small win.

Then Rachel's corporate colleague presented the Northstar documents.

Martin's management role.

Charles's historical transfer.

The altered trust page.

The preexisting relationship with Vanessa.

Martin's calm finally cracked.

“Those matters have nothing to do with Daniel's fitness.”

Julia leaned forward.

“They have everything to do with your conflict of interest.”

The room changed.

Northstar had called the meeting to isolate me.

Instead, Martin's undisclosed relationship with my wife became the governance problem.

Then Elaine was asked about Sophie.

She answered carefully.

She had documented redness and a bruise.

She had concerns about an unsupported medication entry made by Martin.

Martin interrupted.

“I had clinical justification.”

Elaine turned toward him.

“Then where is your note?”

Silence.

There wasn't one.

The board voted.

I wasn't removed.

Instead, Martin was required to disclose Northstar's beneficial ownership and recuse himself from any company matter involving my family pending review.

Major payoff.

Their first corporate attack failed.

But it cost me.

The board placed temporary limits on unilateral executive decisions while an independent investigation reviewed everything.

I accepted them.

Outside the conference room, Elaine caught me.

“There is something else.”

She handed Rachel a copy of an internal clinic audit.

Martin had accessed Sophie's chart seventeen times in three months.

Far beyond normal.

But one access date stood out.

He opened Sophie's medical file six months before Vanessa ever brought Sophie to his clinic.

He shouldn't have known Sophie was his future patient.

He shouldn't have had any reason to look.

Unless Sophie herself had been part of the plan before Vanessa married me.

📖 Martin's unauthorized access proved Sophie had been targeted early, and the reason hidden inside her medical file had nothing to do with her health. 👇
