Chapter 20 - THE CRACK

Vanessa contacted Rachel the next morning.
Not me.
That mattered.
She wanted to negotiate.
Her lawyer proposed cooperation concerning Northstar in exchange for favorable consideration in our marital financial dispute.
Rachel's answer was immediate.
“Daniel cannot promise outcomes in criminal, regulatory, custody, or child-protection matters.”
Vanessa could cooperate.
But she couldn't buy absolution from me.
She agreed to a formal interview with her attorney present.
I wasn't allowed in the room.
That frustrated me.
Then I realized that was good.
This wasn't revenge theater.
It was evidence.
Afterward, Rachel told me only what she could.
Vanessa admitted knowing Mercer before meeting me.
She admitted Charles introduced her into my life deliberately.
She admitted receiving money.
She admitted seeking access to my trust documents.
She denied intentionally injuring Sophie beyond the slap.
She denied drugging me.
She blamed Mercer and Charles for the financial scheme.
She blamed Martin for the medical strategy.
Everyone blamed everyone.
But Vanessa produced something investigators hadn't found.
A cloud archive.
Mercer had required weekly progress reports.
Vanessa kept copies because she never trusted him.
Those reports documented the scheme evolving over eighteen months.
They did not support every accusation I had imagined.
That was important.
There was no plan to kill me.
No plan to kill Sophie.
No evidence they caused Emily's death.
The actual plan was less sensational and more believable.
Undermine me.
Create concerns about competence.
Gain leverage over my shares.
Pressure a sale to Northstar.
Position Vanessa to benefit financially from my family assets if the marriage survived—or from a settlement if it collapsed.
Sophie's custody was leverage.
That truth was horrifying enough.
Then one progress report mentioned the kitchen.
Need visible incident if D becomes aggressive.
I read the line twice.
Vanessa claimed Mercer had instructed her to provoke me into losing control.
She said she hadn't planned to hit Sophie.
I didn't believe that part automatically.
But suddenly the kitchen confrontation had another dimension.
She had wanted me angry.
I had given her exactly what she needed when I slapped her.
Except she hadn't expected the security audio.
She hadn't expected me to admit what I'd done.
And she hadn't expected Eric to resurface.
The alliance was collapsing.
Then investigators examined Vanessa's cloud archive metadata.
Most files were genuine contemporaneous documents.
One had been created only forty-eight hours earlier.
It purported to show Mercer ordering Vanessa to “do whatever necessary with the child.”
A fake.
Vanessa was still manipulating evidence while supposedly cooperating.
Rachel looked at me.
“She hasn't changed.”
Neither had the danger.
Vanessa wasn't surrendering.
May you like
She was changing targets.
📖 Vanessa's forged file destroyed her attempt to become the helpful witness, and the consequences would push her into the most desperate move she'd made yet. 👇
