Chapter 21 - THE FAILED DEAL

Vanessa's cooperation agreement never became the shield she wanted.

Investigators caught the fabricated document before relying on it.

Her credibility collapsed.

Her attorney withdrew from representing her shortly afterward, citing professional reasons he didn't publicly specify.

Mercer's team immediately attacked everything Vanessa had provided.

That meant the genuine cloud records now required painstaking independent verification.

Emails were matched to servers.

Payments to banks.

Dates to calendars.

Messages to devices.

Slow.

Boring.

Real.

That was how the case became stronger.

Not through one spectacular reveal.

Through corroboration.

Meanwhile, Sophie's custody situation stabilized.

The court reviewed the medical documentation, household audio, Vanessa's own statements, and the ongoing investigation.

Her request for temporary custodial authority was denied.

Any contact with Sophie would require court-approved conditions.

I felt relief.

Not victory.

Sophie still woke crying some nights.

She had started becoming anxious around the kitchen stool.

So I removed it.

Then I reconsidered.

Avoiding it forever would let one terrible moment own the room.

With guidance from her pediatrician, we let Sophie return to ordinary kitchen routines safely and gradually.

She sat in her high chair while I washed dishes.

Sometimes she handed me a plastic spoon.

Nothing more.

Healing looked smaller than revenge.

Then Julia called.

The independent corporate investigation had verified undisclosed coordination between Northstar, Charles, and Vanessa.

The board restored most of my executive authority.

Martin's Northstar role was under formal scrutiny.

Mercer still owned his economic interests.

But he had lost the element he needed most.

Secrecy.

I should have felt we were winning.

Instead, Rachel received an emergency call.

Vanessa had disappeared.

Her new attorney couldn't reach her.

Her car was found at an airport parking garage.

No evidence of foul play.

No indication she boarded a commercial flight under her own name.

Then my home security system alerted.

Someone had entered the detached storage room behind my garage.

Police responded because of the active protective circumstances.

The person was gone before they arrived.

Nothing obvious had been stolen.

Then Nathan noticed the empty shelf.

Emily's remaining paper files.

Gone.

I stared at the dust outline where the archive box had been.

Vanessa had spent eighteen months trying to erase what Emily knew.

Now, when the scheme was collapsing, someone had come for the last physical records.

But the intruder had made one mistake.

The storage-room camera hadn't been deleted.

The footage showed a woman entering.

Not Vanessa.

My mother recognized her immediately.

“Megan Cole.”

Nathan's former girlfriend.
