Chapter 24 - THE LOWEST POINT

Vanessa called me at 2:13 a.m.

I answered because Sophie was asleep beside my bed in a portable crib and I recognized the number as one Rachel had flagged from Vanessa's attorney.

“Daniel.”

Her voice was shaking.

“Where are you?”

“I need you to listen.”

“No. Call your lawyer.”

“I can't.”

I heard traffic.

Then crying.

Not theatrical crying.

Fear.

“Mercer knows I kept copies.”

“Then contact law enforcement.”

“He'll destroy me.”

“You helped him destroy my family.”

Silence.

“I know.”

Those two words almost pulled me into the conversation she wanted.

Then I remembered everything I'd learned.

Don't react.

Don't rescue her from consequences.

Don't make promises.

“Vanessa, I will not meet you privately. Contact your attorney or authorities.”

“You don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

Then she said, “Martin has the original trust document.”

I froze.

The missing original.

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

“For whom?”

“For himself.”

She claimed Martin had kept physical documents, medication records, and communications proving Mercer knew how far the scheme had gone.

“Where?”

She started to answer.

Then the line died.

I called Rachel immediately.

Authorities were notified.

I did not go looking for Vanessa.

That decision may have saved me from another trap.

By morning, Vanessa was found safe at a hotel.

She had intentionally disconnected the call after becoming frightened by someone in the lobby.

No kidnapping.

No dramatic attack.

But her fear was real enough that she finally surrendered her devices and provided the location of Martin's private document storage.

A lawful search followed.

The results were devastating.

The original trust agreement was there.

So were copies of my medical records.

Sophie's exported chart.

Northstar communications.

And a notebook.

Martin had documented dates, meetings, payments, and concerns about Mercer.

He had been keeping leverage against everyone.

Then came the worst entry.

Kitchen incident useful. V says D struck her. Child injury complicates optics.

Martin knew Vanessa had hurt Sophie.

And his first reaction had been to evaluate how it affected their strategy.

I sat on my kitchen floor after reading the summary Rachel was permitted to share.

For weeks, I had imagined the lowest point would be losing my company.

It wasn't.

It was realizing multiple adults had looked at my daughter and seen leverage.

I picked up the plastic cup Sophie had dropped beside me.

She toddled over.

“Daddy?”

I lifted her.

“I've got you.”

This time, the words didn't feel like rage.

They felt like responsibility.

Then Rachel called again.

Martin had agreed to cooperate.

And unlike Vanessa or Charles, he had one piece of evidence neither could fabricate.

A recorded meeting with Mercer.

The final confrontation had just moved from accusation to proof.

📖 Martin's private recording could finally establish how much Mercer authorized, but hearing it would also reveal which parts of Vanessa's cruelty were hers alone. 👇
