Chapter 4 - THE GARAGE VIDEO

“I met Vanessa before you did.”
Nathan said it in the clinic parking lot.
For several seconds, all I heard was traffic.
“How long before?”
“Four months.”
Sophie slept against my shoulder.
Nathan looked ashamed.
“She approached me at a charity event. We had drinks twice. Nothing serious happened.”
“Define nothing serious.”
“We kissed.”
I stared at him.
“Then she met you?”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me?”
“She begged me not to. She said she'd made a mistake and genuinely liked you.”
My grip tightened around Sophie's blanket.
“The garage video?”
Nathan rubbed both hands over his face.
“About six months ago, after you married her, Vanessa came to my house. She said she needed advice about you. We argued in my garage. She kissed me again.”
“Did you kiss her back?”
“For a second.”
The admission landed harder than I expected.
Nathan looked sick.
“I pushed her away. But my garage camera recorded it.”
“And she's been using that against you.”
“Not exactly.”
He showed me another message.
This one was six weeks old.
Do what I ask and Daniel never sees how loyal his brother really is.
“What did she ask?”
“Your security password.”
My stomach dropped.
Nathan's eyes filled with shame.
“I gave it to her.”
I stepped away from him.
“You gave my wife administrator access to the cameras?”
“She said she wanted to check whether the nanny was treating Sophie properly.”
“We don't have a nanny.”
“I know that now.”
I almost laughed from disbelief.
Instead, I opened the car door and secured Sophie in her seat.
Nathan stood outside.
“You were the leak,” I said.
“Yes.”
That was the first major answer.
Vanessa hadn't guessed my password.
Nathan had betrayed me.
But it opened a worse question.
Why had she needed administrator access months before I ever suspected her?
Nathan forwarded me the threatening messages and the garage recording.
I watched only enough to confirm his story.
Vanessa initiated the kiss.
Nathan responded briefly.
Then he pulled away.
Ugly.
Humiliating.
But not what Vanessa wanted me focused on.
I remembered Eric Dawson's call.
He had reached me six weeks earlier from a blocked number.
“Don't believe the accident story,” he'd whispered. “She didn't do it alone.”
I thought he meant Vanessa had lied about his death.
Now Sophie had repeated the same phrase.
Two people.
Same warning.
Different years.
I called the number Eric had used.
Disconnected.
Then I searched the name Martin Hale with Eric Dawson.
One result appeared in an archived local-business article.
Eric had once owned Dawson Medical Logistics.
The company's consulting physician had been Dr. Martin Hale.
I enlarged the photograph.
Martin stood beside Eric.
And Vanessa stood between them.
They had all known one another years before Vanessa met me.
My marriage hadn't started with a chance encounter.
It had started with a connection she had deliberately hidden.
Then Nathan whispered, “Daniel.”
He pointed across the parking lot.
A dark SUV had been idling near the clinic entrance.

The moment I looked at it, it pulled away.
📖 Vanessa's connection to Martin and Eric proved my marriage had begun with a lie, but confronting her would reveal why Sophie had become useful to them. 👇
