Chapter 10 - THE ARCHIVE UNDER HER NAME

Signal Ridge maintained cloud backups for ninety days.
Most older recordings were automatically deleted.
Victoria had downloaded selected clips to private storage.
Rebecca obtained preservation before she could erase it.
The archive contained folders labeled by subject.
NATHAN—BUSINESS.
NATHAN—PERSONAL.
GRACE.
LILY.
My stomach turned when I saw my daughter’s name.
The Lily folder contained nothing from her bedroom.
Thank God.
Mostly kitchen conversations, foyer audio, and clips from days she visited me.
Still invasive.
Still wrong.
Nathan’s business folder was worse.
Victoria had recorded confidential calls about acquisitions and private negotiations.
One clip involved Cole Meridian stock strategy.
Rebecca immediately separated possible corporate issues from our personal case.
Nathan looked exhausted.
“She was collecting leverage.”
Against everyone.
Then one audio file answered a smaller question.
Victoria speaking to Daniel six months earlier.
“If Nathan finds out before the wedding, he’ll cancel everything.”
Daniel replied, “Then make sure Grace doesn’t know enough to tell him.”
“I’ll bring her close.”
That was my hiring plan.
Another clip:
“She still thinks he rejected her.”
“Keep it that way.”
Reward.
Direct corroboration.
But then Daniel asked:
“What happens after you’re married?”
Victoria answered quietly.
“We won’t need Grace anymore.”
My skin went cold.
Rebecca replayed it.
Nathan stood.
“Does that mean what I think?”
“We don’t know.”
I hated how necessary that phrase had become.
Context mattered.
Later audio supplied some.
Daniel discussed paying me to relocate.
Victoria rejected the idea.
“She won’t stay gone twice.”
“Then what?”
Silence.
No answer.
That absence frightened me more than one would have.
The archive also contained something deeply personal.
A conversation between Nathan and Victoria from two years earlier.
Nathan said he wanted children someday.
Victoria responded:
Then we’ll have our own.
Our own.
She already knew Lily existed.
Nathan turned off the audio.
“I can’t listen to more.”
I understood.
There are lies that hide information.
Then there are lies that force someone to perform an entire relationship inside a false reality.
Victoria had done the second.
Nathan’s anger toward her changed after that.
Less explosive.
Colder.
Grief settling where love had been.
The twist arrived from an unexpected folder.
CHARLES.
Victoria had recorded Nathan’s CFO too.
One file captured Charles arguing with her three years earlier.
“You told me the child wasn’t his.”
“I handled it.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“I said it’s handled.”
“I won’t sign another payment.”
“You already signed the first.”
Charles had not known Lily was Nathan’s daughter.
Not then.
He was guilty of negligence and cowardice.
But Victoria had kept him deceived too.
The man we suspected as co-conspirator was beginning to look more like another compromised witness.
Then Charles’s final sentence changed everything.
“If Daniel forged Grace’s release, I’m going to Nathan.”
Victoria answered:
“If you do, I’ll show him what you did with the Mercer account.”
Nathan stopped the recording.
“What Mercer account?”
May you like
Charles had a secret of his own.
📖 Victoria’s archive proved she deceived Charles about Lily while blackmailing him over a mysterious Mercer account, turning Nathan’s trusted CFO from suspected partner into trapped accomplice. 👇
