Chapter 14 - WHEN THE STORY TURNED AGAINST ME

The headline was everywhere by morning.

HOUSEKEEPER DEMANDED $3 MILLION FROM BILLIONAIRE FIANCÉE’S FAMILY.

Daniel’s filing leaked within an hour.

The video looked terrible without audio.

Me sitting across from him.

The folder.

My angry expression.

My quick exit.

Nathan wanted to make the recording public.

Rebecca refused.

“Evidence first. Public relations second.”

The full audio proved Daniel offered me money.

But releasing it might contaminate witnesses and complicate the criminal investigation now forming around Victoria’s assault.

I had to live with the lie temporarily.

That was harder than I expected.

Parents at Lily’s preschool stared.

One mother moved her child away from us at pickup.

Lily noticed.

“Did I do something?”

“No.”

“Did you?”

My throat tightened.

“No.”

“Then why are they looking?”

Because adults often punish children for stories they do not understand.

I did not say that.

“Because they heard something confusing.”

Nathan’s company board requested he take temporary leave while allegations involving forged share collateral were investigated.

He agreed.

Victoria’s lenders froze several accounts.

Daniel denied every allegation.

Charles stepped down as CFO voluntarily.

Everyone was losing something.

Then my housing became a problem.

Reporters found my apartment.

Nathan offered the mansion.

I refused.

“That’s where Victoria hit me.”

His face changed.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

Rebecca arranged temporary housing under a confidential lease.

Nathan did not ask for the address until I volunteered it.

Small trust.

Built correctly.

The audio forensic chain from my hotel recording remained intact because my phone had uploaded automatically before Daniel could challenge it.

Rebecca filed the complete recording under seal.

The judge denied Daniel’s emergency request to restrict my contact with Nathan.

Reward.

His extortion narrative weakened.

But my earlier warning had consequences.

Daniel’s surviving notary journal contained missing pages covering the exact dates of my settlement and Nathan’s loan.

The binding showed they had been removed recently.

No proof Daniel did it.

Still damaging.

Then a hotel employee contacted Rebecca.

He had seen Daniel before our meeting.

“With who?” she asked.

“Victoria Hayes.”

They had met in the same lobby thirty minutes earlier.

Victoria was under an interim no-contact order regarding me.

If Daniel arranged the meeting on her behalf, it could matter.

Security footage confirmed she entered through a side entrance.

But the twist came later.

Victoria was not meeting Daniel.

She was meeting Charles.

Nathan stared at the image.

“Charles told us he hadn’t spoken to her in weeks.”

Charles had just become our key cooperating witness.

And now video showed him secretly meeting the woman he claimed had blackmailed him.

When Rebecca called, he did not answer.

For the first time, I wondered whether we had trusted the wrong frightened man.
